Providing additional (scrap paper) in examsThe following comments have been made by different exams officers in response to a query about providing additional paper to students in an exam situation.
“If you look in ice book page 20 9.1 bullet point 2 it says no rough paper can be provided. It also says official exam stationary is to be issued so we take it that they can have an additional answer sheet for rough work -this is attached to the answer paper and if the student does not want it marked they cross it out.” and
“I see what you are saying about this but it does state categorically on the invigilators announcement on page 42 that "you must write all rough work in your answer book (and cross it through with a single line) no mention of bits of paper official or otherwise.”
Let’s be clear about what all this is about. The reason behind any directive from the JCQ is to stop any student being given the opportunity to pull out any bit of paper in an exam and pretend it was given to them by someone else. Secondly, most scripts are being scanned and single sheets can be missed or misrepresented in this process and as one exam officer mentioned, whole scripts can be scanned but additional sheets may need to be mark independently contributing to additional costs for awarding bodies.
The principle to follow which is referenced above is to ask students to write all answers and workings onto their answer booklet. If they do not want anything marked, remind them to put a single line through it. Should a student need an additional booklet to complete their exam so be it but it’s all submitted and it is then down to the examiner to deal with the material sent to them.
What has happened in the past is that some students have requested additional sheets for rough work and been refused under this JCQ ruling. There is no problem with supporting students needs but everyone needs be clear about how this material will be referenced and how it should be distributed in an exam context.
To repeat the advice. Tell students to capture everything on their scripts and then cross out the sections they do not want to have marked.
